Michael Attwater

Born in West Sussex in 1973, Michael sat on a pony for the first time when he was 9 years of age and pestered his parents for riding lessons until his 10th birthday. It wasn’t too long before the riding school, in conjunction with his pestering, persuaded his parents to buy him his own pony. When the pony was kept in Findon next to a racing yard, Michael met Paul Howling and the trainer became a family friend. When Paul started training in Surrey, Michael was invited to go to the yard and stay at weekends as and when he wanted. This became a regular Friday and Sunday night trip for his parents throughout the next 3 years until he left school at the age of 16. By now Michael was focussed on becoming a jockey and he started working for Paul, remaining there for the next 2 years.

Because of Michael’s height (6ft 4 inches), he needed to get into a jump yard and headed off to Epsom to realise his ambition with Gary Moore. At the age of 21, Michael had his first ride in a novice hurdle at Folkestone on a filly named Sophie May for trainer Mark Dixon. When he asked Mark for any last-minute instructions he was told to go and enjoy himself, which is exactly what he did by winning the race at 33-1! Michael had 35 rides with 5 wins before ending his riding career to turn his ambitions to one day becoming a trainer. His attention now turned to moving up the ladder in the yard and when Gary left Epsom, Michael moved with him to Brighton but soon returned to Epsom and joined Reg Akehurst. He later became Assistant Trainer to Akehurst’s son John.

Michael moved to Nottingham to take up a position as an employed trainer in 2004, where he remained for 2 seasons and saddled 43 winners. He finally made the decision to break away on his own and in January 2007 commenced training in Lambourn for a short period before once again returning to Epsom. Now based at Tattenham Corner Stables with over 30 horses and many more winners in a relatively short career, Michael feels very settled and is now looking forward to enjoying an exciting future.
